This small book is the result of my personal experience. I have always been sensitive to friendship. I have had and still have many male and female friends though I have not always been able to cultivate their friendship due to the nature of my missionary work. This situation may have increased my sensitivity to the subject. I have always looked for the life of friendship in the lives of saints who have attracted me since my youth. I believed that their great friendship with Jesus would lead to great human friendships and this I found to be the case. Among our modern-day saints, I was drawn to Charles de Foucauld especially for that reason. Later, I re-discovered Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross whom I had never really understood during my training. Then, I realized that today's schools of spirituality, including that of de Foucauld, were their disciples. In Saint Teresa I found a woman especially rich in friendship, someone I could befriend, someone whose whole life was centered on her friendship with the human Jesus. Not long ago, a Teresian friend of mine made me see how Saint Teresa's prayer was rooted in that friendship, and how her contemplative journey was the story of her friendship with God.
