In this book Fr Abelé is concerned with the relationship between faith and the scientists' exploration of the universe. He begins by examining those aspects of Christianity that have a direct bearing on scientific method, particularly the law of work announced by Christ and further expounded by St Paul, the oneness of the universe, and the universal character of Pentecost. He then goes on to trace the encounter between Christianity and science during the course of history, showing the fundamental difference between the Greek concept of science with its contempt for technology and Christianity which from mediaeval times to the present day has supported increasingly man's search to know and to control nature. Fr Abelé examines also the beliefs of such founders of modern science as Galileo, Kepler, Newton and, in our own times, Einstein. Concluding chapters explain the harmony between the spirit of faith and the spirit of research.
