<note>Dom Illtyd Trethowan here explores one of the less usual approaches to the philosophy of religion. He argues that the apprchension of God is at the heart of any philosophy of religion which can hope to recommend itself to a thinking man and that such an apprehension is bound up with the whole range of human experience. In developing his own approach to the problem Fr Trethowan examines the positions of a wide range of thinkers, Catholic and non-Catholic, including logical positivists, linguistic analysts and existentialists. Fr Trethowan also analyses the thought of philosophers whose solution is akin to his own such as Marcel, Forest, Blondel and Lavelle in France and in Britain E. L. Mascall, Principal Baillie, E. L Watkin and Austin Farrer. Fr Trethowan's argument shirks nore of the objections likely to be raised and his answers - free of technical jargon - are always firmly rooted in common human experience aird values.</note>
